Shotokan Karate is a traditional style of Japanese karate developed by Gichin Funakoshi in the early 20th century. It is one of the most widely practiced styles of karate in the world and is known for its emphasis on discipline, powerful techniques, and strong stances.

Early Journey and Training
Chrissie began karate training in the early 1980s. By age 15, she had already earned her black belt, and went on to achieve 2nd and 3rd dan ranks between ages 15 and 23
Her training primarily focused on Shotokan Karate, but she also cross-trained in Taekwondo, Kyoshu Jitsu, unarmed combat, as well as control and restraint techniques—skills she later used during her career in the police officer and prison service.
Competitive and Teaching Career
Chrissie competed extensively, earning regional, national, and international medals—including a gold medal at the World Championships in Los Angeles.
She later earned her 4th dan in 2018 around age 45.
Chrissie serves as a club instructor at Alnwick Karate, in the UK, sharing her knowledge and experience with students at all levels.
Philosophy & Approach
Chrissie overcame severe shyness in her youth—using martial arts to build confidence and personal courage. During her competitive years, she confessed perfectionism and nerves “flooded her soul,” making winning a bittersweet experience.
She advocates mindful practice and intelligent movement. Chrissie emphasizes using efficient body mechanics—especially back-leg drive and focused energy—to optimize power and control in karate technique.

She hosts seminars and workshops across the UK, focusing on energy flow, partner sensitivity, and intelligent combative strategy.
